Though I'm not an English player, I strongly recommend you to go for the big thing. It will help create a community in your country, and it'll probably be a lot of fun for all of you to test your skills against unknown opponents.
If you have the tools and opportunities to organize something that big, with no or low costs, take your chance and do it.
Plus, it'll make more people come around here, and thus create an even larger virtual community, than creating even bigger opportunities for events, etc etc etc.

I got a reply. Here it is.
"We would be happy for you to do an informal Dungeon Twister Tournament either:
By using a table or two in our Free Play area on saturday or Sunday
or
By running it Friday night or Saturday night at the Strathallan.
I suspect you might get the odd taker saturday night as we did have about 100 gamers playing their last year. "
How should we proceed. Ask on BBG if there are any other interested players? What do you guys think ? |
Saturday night would probably be the best time as we could advertise the game during the day. However, I am still not sure I could come Sunday too. Further, I am still waiting for confirmation from my boss if I can come on the Saturday though it is likely. Therefore, I suggest going for the Saturday afternoon.
As I have never participated to any game tournament, I have no clear idea of how to organise it. But I will discuss with friends of mine who participated to one recently in Belgium. Maybe Sherinford or other members might advise us on the best way to proceed for a beginner-friendly event. I am besides wondering if, for a first time, we should focus on a tournament or just a gathering of players (what they call DTL in Belgium). A tournament would be nice but probably asking 1) more organization and 2) at least between 4 and 8 players. Are we sure to be at least 4?
I will think about it this weekend and let you know what I think in more details around Wednesday (I have friends coming from Belgium till Tuesday, so I will be busy).
As soon as we know what format of event we are going for, I will post on BGG too to try getting more players.

Hi,
Given the poor feedback we have got so far from English players on this forum, I am still not convinced organising a tournament is a good idea. Organising a simple gathering of DT players seems more realistic to me and might sound more open to beginners.
However, why not giving it a shot! The convention is a good opportunity for advertising the game, as highlighted by Phoenixio.
Here is what I think:
* We need to see this unofficial tournament as a beginner-friendly event.
* I suggest a full frontal format but using only the basic set + Paladins & Dragons (they are easier... and the only ones I have played so far even if I have all the French expansions )
* We should allow to restrict the game to the basic set if playing against a beginner who ask for it.
* Time limit as indicated in the tournament kit (+ not forgetting timers)
* Swiss rounds (cf. tournament kit); 4 rounds maximum and goal average
* We need a referee. I am OK for doing it but as I haven't played the game for ages, I need to learn the FAQ.
* We need to sort out how to calculate the international ranking (and intermediate rankings for doing the pairing of opponents)
* Prizes: goodies (contacting Asmodée US/Sherinford)
* Bringing the games: I can bring some given, as aforementionned, I have all of them but in French only (I am a french speaker). This could be a problem for real beginners.
* Advertising: post on BGG and this forum; letting know some shops. Any other idea? Clubs?
* Finally, how do we deal with an odd number of players?
* For the choice of the day, it might thus be on the Saturday. Do you think it would be better during the evening? As far as I am concern, I still don't know for sure if I can manage to come. I should know by the end of next week. This doesn't however prevent us from posting on BGG the fact that we are organising a tournament on the Saturday and giving some details about the format. We might have some feedback about the best time for people interested and decide when to run it. We could therefore also advertise the event in shops and other forums.
I am waiting for your feedback concerning the previous points before proceeding any further.

If I remember well, in French, it was mostly Base Set only tournaments at this stade. I mean, because you want to do publicity to aknowledge the game in your country, you should keep it simple and not overload people with unusefull information such as the existence of extensions.
Though I've never been to real big conventions, I suppose that if you have a few tables (and chairs), you could make publicity, and let people who come by play with you. And because it only needs 2 players at a time, it shouldn't be very complicated getting pairs (including the referee who could play with handicaps). That would be a big promotionnal event for beginners, by players themselves.
If you plan on doing a real tournament, you should post on BGG or any other English forum as soon as possible, to see if there are any interested in competing. Such information would help you organize the event a little bit more, as you would know which format to use (tournament vs "come and play"
The rest is up to the English community. At worst, do a little tournament of 4-8 players, and the rest would be some exercises, some quick play versions. Olivier from the French forum had an interesting document he made about how to teach the game: only 4 rooms and 4 characters for quick games with basic rules. It's a path to look at if you're planning to teach the game to a lot of beginners.

Hi Again
I agree with all you have said. I think we need to take the chance and try it. We will have a large audience to introduce the game to. We have nothing to loose and can hopefully start a viable Dungeon Twister community.
If you help me, I am sure we can manage. I know the rules well and can explain in English. It is not a difficult game to teach the basics. We will need to be flexible as to what we end up doing since it is difficult to gauge numbers so far. I am confident we will end up with 4 -8 players and introduce a whole lot of new people to a wonderful game.
I guess the basic set is best to start with. I have a copy of the game and the 3/4 player set too, so have enough for 2 games at once. If we have some goodies as prizes it will surley help attract more interest.
The Saturday afternoon would be perfect.
Also I would gladly meet with you Hoppipolla, and we could play a few games anyway. I have the basic set, paladins and dragons, the 3/4 player expansion, a French copy of fire and water, Forces of Darkness, Mercenaries and the Feu et Sang expansion.
Lets give it a go and see what happens. It might lead to a more formal event later in the year, who knows.

Hi, just explored the forum after finding the download section worthwhile. I might be able to attend as well but need more details about the Con.
Is there a website for it?
If by any chance you live in the SouthWest maybe we could organise something more local.

OK then: we are going for a small tournament on the Saturday afternoon (around 14h00) restricted to the basic set.
Bcubed and I can share the refereeing.
I will bring some boxes too even if in French (at least basic set and ¾ players)
I am going to post on BGG this morning and insist that beginners are welcome. Furthermore, “come and play” is welcome too.
I am also writing to Asmodée US for getting goodies and other promotional material.
Finally, in the worst case scenario, we will at least be two. So, as you said, we could play together.
